NEW DBD Song & new music!

So, we put up a new Death Before Dishonor song yesterday entitled, "Coffin Nail".  This is one of my favorite songs to play and to listen to off the new album, and a good representation of it as a whole.  The album drops July 28th on Bridge 9 Records.  Also next week, our 7inch entitled, "Our Glory Days" comes out as well.  It features two songs from the new album as well as an exclusive cover song.  Definitely check these things out at
www.Bridge9.com

I fly to Boston to meet up with the guys on July 2nd for some practice before the 10 Bands for $10 tour.  We are playing a 7inch release show on the 3rd at the Tiger's Den in Brockton as well.  Not sure of full details at this point but, the show will be great.  There will definitely be exclusive limited screenprinted 7inch covers designed by my brother Juicy Joel .

In other news, I've been rockin a lot new music lately that I figured I'd share with anybody who's interested.  Definitely not a lot of hardcore, but what can I say, I think I hear enough of that stuff in my gig life.  Although, check out my brother's blog for some solid reviews of new hardcore.  Here we go....

First off, the new Dave Matthews Band record "Big Whiskey and The Groo Grux King is excellent.  They're definitely throwing back to their earlier style of "Under The Table and Dreaming" and "Crash".  I love this band.... NO SHAME.

A Loss For Words - "The Kids Can't Lose":  These are young kids from the South Boston area playing very very catchy, well thought out pop punk.  I hope the best for these guys because I think they deserve it.  The recording sounds great which is impressive considering they have no label backing AT ALL.  PS Singer Matty Arsenault sang all melodic backing vocals on the new DBD record.  For fans of New Found Glory, Paramore etc.  Big ups to A Loss For Words!

Billy Talent - "III":  Their third record (obviously) due out sometime in July.  I became a big fan of this band a couple years back thanks to Javier of The Warriors .  This band definitely has a unique sound that I don't think is for everybody, but it's definitely for me.  Anybody familiar with Billy Talent can expect a great follow up to II with some unfamiliar but super catchy melodies all over it.

I'll update again when I head back to Boston.  They call me the breeze...

You're shot...

So I'm at home for the next month before we start the 10 Band for $10 tour.  I'm very excited for this tour and to be out on the road again with Madball, Terror and Trapped Under Ice
While I'm home, I'm working on some endorsements as well as replacing all my broken cymbals.  A chore for sure, but it needs to be done.
I took these pictures during our 6 hour layover in the Frankfurt airport at Mcdonalds.  We were a mess.  This is what our band looks like after a flight from Hamburg Germany to Moscow, a gig, an overnight train ride to St. Petersburg, a ton of walking around, a gig, and a late night flight from St. Petersburg to Frankfurt.  6am German time.  Enjoy.  You're shot...

After tour update

So I got lazy on tour and stopped updating for the second half.  The tour ended up being a whole lot of fun and I tried to take advantage of that rather than sitting on my computer.  We went to Russia and played possibly the greatest hardcore show I've ever experienced in Moscow.  St. Petersburg was great as well.  I'll post up some awesome pictures.  We're on a break right now so we're all at home relaxing.  See you on the road again July 9th.  Check out the pics!  They call me the breeze...

Day 18/19

I'm currently sitting in the Lobby of the ACHAT hotel in Bochum Germany.  The last two shows were Freiburg and Bochum.  Bother of the shows were pretty small but the crowd got in to it so they were still fun.  Good food at both venues and good places to stay as well.  Bryan got reeeeeeal drunk last night so our set was extra entertaining.  To anybody who has not experienced drunk Bryan Harris, buy him drinks on our US tour and witness the beauty.
There's not a lot to report otherwise right now.  We play Marburg tonight, then Berlin tomorrow.  There WILL be things to report after Berlin.   Other than that, I've been listening to the new CF and Steel Nation records a lot on our drives.  Also Dustin Kensrue, Atmosphere, Playa Fly and of course the new DBD record.
Since I really have no updates, I'm gonna post the pics from our ice cream escapades.  Enjoy.  They call me the breeze...

Day 15

Augsburg was amazing.  I don't know what it is about Germany but their hardcore scene is great.  Big ups to Germany.  Big ups to good meals, good beers, good shows, and good hotels.  A successful night for sure.  Frankie got wasted... enough said.
We get along with the guys in Nations Afire so well and they're band is great.  Real melodic and veeeery good. I hope this band blows up for real.  If you haven't checked them out yet, please do so immediately by following the link.
In other news, we got the cover art for "Better Ways To Die" as well as the hand drawn artwork for our 7inch entitled "Our Glory Days".  Both look amazing and I can't wait for people to get this record.  It will be out on Bridge 9 Records in late July and we'll be playing new tracks from here on out.  Dig it.
We play Weinheim Germany tonight which should be a very good time.  We already had dinner, which was amazing, so I have high hopes for the gig.  Also the band got a couple cool pics from a castle and then ate ice cream.  I'll post one up here.  Gig life.  They call me the breeze...

Tour Day 14

Currently in Augsburg Germany which is about 20 miles away from Munich.  In the last 4 days we've played 3 pretty good shows.  First was in Solothurn Switzerland with Death By Stereo.  The show was kind of weird, not a lot of movement but merch sales were good.  I got drunk as shit and the night ended at a hostel not too far from the venue.   I slept in a loft above the door.  Needless to say, it was not easy to get up there and DEFINITELY not easy to get down to piss 3 times.  Whatever though, I survived it.
We had a show scheduled for the next day in Decines France but that got canceled.... darn... I don't like France.  So instead we drove to Schweinfurt Germany and had a very pooring off day.  Nothing to report here.
We woke up in Schweinfurt and headed towards Magdeburg.  Finally, a show in Germany.  For some reason there were no support bands on this show so it was just us and Nations Afire.  Either way, we had some time to practice and FINALLY played a new song.  The night ended with drunken consumption of a doner kebap.   Good show, good day.
Yesterday was Niesky Germany which is about 8 miles from Poland.  On the way there we stopped in Dresden and saw some really cool architecture.  It was cool to do a little sight seeing because we haven't done much of that on this tour.  The show in Niesky was really good.  A lot of young kids, lots of mosh, really hot and we played another new song.  Load out was a motherfucker due to the lack of common sense on the average drunk German.  We got a very nice hotel though.  Since we've been in Germany things have been awesome.
Tonight is Augsburg.  We'll see how it goes.  They call me the breeze...

PS Nations Afire bought a hacky sack... will post video.

Europe day 11

Soooooo, my original intention with this blog was to update it everyday while on the road.  I didn't take in to account how very unaccessable the internet would be while I was here.  We played Groezrock festival last Saturday which was our first show.  We met up with Nations Afire which was excellent.  Two of the guys are from Ignite and we love those dudes.  The other three guys are pretty great too.  Overall, I'm really excited to be on the road with these guys.
After Groezrock we went directly to France for two days...... weak.  No offense to French Hardcore kids but I just don't like France.  SAHO!  I'll skip over France.
Fast forward to Spain.  I LOVE Spain.  We met up with Walls of Jericho and Final Prayer for 4 Spain shows and 1 in Portugal. The shows were great, Spanish women are beautiful, beaches were great and the weather was excellent.  Spain and Portugal are by far my two favorite countries to go to in Europe.  I do have one complaint.  ATTN Spanish gas stations:  Step up your FUCKING FOOD SELECTION.  Egg and potato casserole on bread with ketchup IS NOT GOOD.  Also, if you give somebody ham, cheese and bread, please provide mayonaise.  NOT KETCHUP.  And to the sound man in Madrid: You're a fuckin douche bag.  Please kill yourself. Anyways, onward with the tour.
Yesterday we left Durango Spain and headed toward Germany.  We didn't have a show, just a long drive back to Germany.  We stopped off, ate some McDonalds and drove 13 hours through France (whack shit) to Freiburg Germany.  We arrived at WaleFisch bar where we were staying for the night.  Now let me tell you.  This bar served me the BEST meal I have ever eaten in Europe.  Cordon Bleu with gravy and fries.  Also for the first time all tour, I drank decent beer.      Anyways, the night continued with more beer drinking and a few shots.  Yes, for the first time in 3 years this DID include Frankie.  It was really funny watching Frankie get drunk but it was a lot of fun.... so I thought.
We waited for Nations Afire to arrive and just bullshitted for a couple hours.  We all settled in and were about to pass out upstairs when Nations Afire arrived.  That's when things got weird.  I can't really describe what happened when NA got upstairs and interacted with Frankie, but it was kind of violent and definitely a little gay.  The night ended with Frankie hitting me in the nuts so hard that I couldn't get up.  SHITTY.
Woke up this morning, had some coffee, ate Subway, and headed to Solothurn Switzerland to play with Death By Stereo.  I will try and update this more often now.  Welcome to gig life.

They call me the breeze....

So the Juice man drove me up to charlotte to catch my plane to frankfurt. Easy check in, easy security, no sweat. I got on the plane and noticed that I was sitting in an aisle next to a couple and their son was in the middle seat one row behind. I offered the kid my aisle seat so he could sit next to his parents. I figured that it was a nice thing to do. I immediately regretted it when I sat down in a middle sit for 8 hours. Although the other middle seat was empty so it made it somewhat tolerable. At any rate I could tell the family appreciated it and I figured I can use all the good karma I can get at this point.
My flight wasn't too bad despite having the worst airplane food of my life. Pasta with peppers peas and mushrooms (the only 3 vegetables that I will not eat). I tried to pick them out but the disgusting pepper taste soaked in to everything so I just drank a ton of water.
We landed about 7 am in Frankfurt. Got through customs super fast and net a soldier that was from Colorado Springs. He was a nice kid and I felt bad that I'm not more social because I know I came off like a dickhole. Truth is, I am just not good in stranger social situations. I tried though.          Anyways, got my bags and met up with the band. It was good to see everybody and finally for the first time in weeks, I felt like I was doing something. Our driver, Schlumf, picked us up in a highlighter yellow gig machine and we started heading to the house we were staying at.
It was great to fuck around with the dudes for the hour ride. We got to the house which belongs to Ralf (nations afire's driver). He has the biggest collection of motorhead memorabilia in all of europe. It is incredibly impressive. The rest of the dudes went with schlumf to pick up our backline and I stuck around with ralf and exchanged money. 80 usd got me 58 euros.... Shitty. Then we ate burger king and I passed out for a couple hours.
About 7 we went and ate at a local restaurant that served us a shitload of grilled meat, rice, fries and veggies. It was excellent. Then we went back to ralf's house and bullshitted, drank beers and got ready for gig life. I love the time before tour when we're organizing merch, changing drum heads, changing strings etc. I feel like a knight about to go in to battle. It's the best feeling in the world. We all passed out early. A great start to the tour. Tomorrow, Belgium, Nations Afire, groezrock, mosh.

Our fight 2009

In the year 2009, the ethics I grew up with in the hardcore scene are virtually non existent.  I grew up fortunate enough to have an older brother to teach me how things should be.  I was brought up in this scene knowing that hardcore was a self sustaining industry meaning: Hardcore relies solely on the people who are involved.  Unfortunately in recent years, it seems the number of sincere people around is dwindling but more people than ever are flying that flag.  I feel like the ethics of hardcore maybe weren't properly passed down from generation to generation.  Still, hardcore is something I believe in strongly.

As somebody who has booked shows in my local scene for 7 years, books tours for bands (bands that I was in or just bands that trust me to do so), has played and continues to play in touring hardcore bands, has put out records, opened my house to any and every hardcore band I could, and attended shows and fests all over the world, the state of the hardcore scene is important to me.

I feel that hardcore has given me so much, that it is my obligation to give back and set an example for younger kids in my local scene and across the country.  Hardcore IS more than music.  It is more than a look or a social group.  Hardcore is a way of life.  It is MY way of life.  Unfortunately, it's something that I feel like, gets twisted and distorted and raped on a daily basis.

DO NOT get me wrong.  I'm not talking just of the faceless clones on a message board.  I'm also talking about people you see in the hardcore scene, in bands, doing labels, doing shows, who are there for nothing more than status or to gain a buck.

I am in the unique position to be able to observe the actions of  every over hyped, over appreciated, bullshit artist fraud from the inside.  And let me say, for every band, label or person that is deserving of their hype and mean what they say, there are 500 that don't.  So from me, a true believer, a lifer, I give you my sincerest "fuck you".  Your band or label may seem important today, but it will not last.  You will move on, and you will be forgotten.  At the end of it all, I will still be here.

With that being said, I still find people in hardcore that inspire me to succeed in everything I do hardcore or not.  As much as I want to dislike the hardcore scene today, some people make it worth it.

Thanks to hardcore I have made the realest connections with some of the best people I could ever want in my life.  I'd like to take this time to acknowledge those people.

Juicy Joel - You are the reason I am who I am and you constantly motivate me to be the best musician and man I can be.  I love you.  We are not meant for this world, but we ride together forever.

Joe Hardcore - You always manage to give the best advice whenever I'm in need of it.  The love you've shown myself and more importantly, my brother will always be appreciated.  You have certainly earned your title.

Scott Vogel - The positive attitude towards hardcore is a constant inspiration to me to keep my eyes on the prize and appreciate what I've got.  You are the realest of the real.

Richie Krutch - You are a wise man and I'm proud to consider you my friend.  You have so many years under your belt in this game and still remain true.  Truly a man to respect.

Zoli Teglas - For constantly pushing me to do more with my musical talent and leaving me obscene messages in the middle of the night.

I would also like to shout out the following people for inspiring me to keep pushing on and overall being great friends that I met through hardcore.  David Wood, Smac Man, Alysha Romero, Sam TUI, Javi and Marshall from The Warriors, Dave Heck, John Bowes, Liz, Ethan Nation, Bryan Harris, Frankie (lifts weights) and my band, COA, Mickey, Chimpo, Mike C, Pete DON, Jeffy, Gabe Wells & Rob To Live, Stu Brundy, Bruce LePage, Terence and Rachel, Chris NASE & Wisdom In Chains, Daniel Die Young, Laredo, TX, Jake, Joaquin NM, Mary KC, Jamie & Andrew in Socal, Mikey Gonsalves, Timmy Peterson, Whiteboy Ben & Andrew A Block, Chedge, and other people,  There's too many to name.

"If you ain't feelin this, them damn it, this ain't for you"

They call me the breeze, ride along as I proceed...

Anxious

I fly out of Charlotte, NC to Frankfurt Germany next Thursday, April 16th. This is one week away and I'm pretty ready for it. I have relocated to Greer, SC for the time being and so far it's pretty great.
Today Bryan sent me the first mixed track off of our new record. The song is called "Peace & Quiet" and it is way beyond my expectations. Thanks a ton to Jon Cohan for providing me with great drums to record with! The album is entitled, "Better Ways To Die", and will be out on Bridge 9 Records in July.
We will also have a 7 inch out with 2 new songs and a cover of The Bruisers "Intimidation". The 7inch will be called "Glory Days" featuring art work by the other half of The Goddamn Murphy Brothers, Juicy Joel. I'm so excited that my own brother is doing the artwork for this and can't wait to lay my eyes on it.
Anyways, I have posted the dates for the Euro tour and will be updating with a tour diary as much as possible while we're gone.  Everybody keep a look out for new DBD jams on myspace next month!

PS More tour updates coming soon including US dates with This Is Hell as well as 5 shows in Mexico!!!!

Movin on

Well, I should be on the road today, with all my worldly possessions, relocating to Greer, South Carolina.  Instead, I'm waiting for a foot of snow to melt.  GDMB will be out of here Monday morning.  Anyways, tour news.....

We just announced our European Tour w/ Nations Afire in April.  This includes Groezrock Festival in Belgium with Street Dogs, The Get Up Kids, NOFX, The Unseen and a ton of other bands.

We'll be in Euroland from April 18th until May 13th? In the meantime, check out Nations Afire featuring current and ex members of Ignite, Rise Against, Reach The Sky and Death By Stereo.  Super catchy, super good.   Dates in the states, Mexico and Canada coming in June.  Also, check out www.deathb4dishonor.com for more info on the band including recording updates.

PS Heard one of the songs off the new DBD with vocals.  I couldn't be more proud of how this stuff has come out.  Look for new jams real soon.

They Call Me The Breeze...

My brother, Juicy Joel, has been trying to convince me to do this blog for sometime.  Truth is, I lack motivation.  Well basically, here's the point...

I play drums in a touring hardcore band called Death Before Dishonor from Boston, Ma.  I joined this band in January of 2008 with the intention of pursuing my dream of playing music for a living.  I was playing in a band called Fight Like Hell in Denver, CO with some of my best friends, but when opportunity strikes, I cannot sit still.  So out with FLH and in with DBD.  I can honestly say it's been one of the best chances I've ever taken.  In the last year of my life, I've played music in 27 different countries, 3 continents, almost every state in the US, made some of the greatest friends I've ever had, and met some of my biggest influences in my choice to play drums/hardcore and music in general.

Now this may seem crazy and exciting to a normal human being, which to an extent it is.  But to some of you that have experienced the same thing, traveling leaves you with an insane amount of down time.  Hence, this blog.

A month ago I was in Japan (pics at the bottom) which was followed up by a month stay in Boston, MA to write and record the next DBD album.  I then went back to Denver for two days, drove to Memphis, TN for BBQ and a Clenched Fist show, and drove back. Now that that's finished, I'm currently back at my home in Denver, CO packing and anxiously awaiting the GDMB move to Greenville/Greer, SC in 11 days, followed by a move to Nashville, TN later in 2009.  They call me the breeze...

*Word Key*
Juicy Joel - My older brother / The man who made me who I am, and the elder half to the GDMB
GDMB - Goddamn Murphy Brothers / The cohesive unit that is myself and my brother.  Learn it, love it.
DBD - Death Before Dishonor / The band that I tour with year round
FLH - Fight Like Hell / The band I was in previous to DBD that played a huge part getting to me where I'm at.
CF - Clenched Fist / My brothers band.  They've been playing since I was 11 years old and are my favorite band of all time.

GDMB PIRE

Forever and a day.
